New Features on Firefox

Users of our Firefox toolbar can now go beyond simple ad replacement and use “Passive Search”. You will notice that there is now a search field in our toolbar. Enter what you are looking for here and our ad replacement technology will replace ads with search results from your query.

Sometimes the results will be simple query results but if you are looking for something commercial (a vacation, flight, camera, etc) ads in your browser will be replaced by… other ads. This is authentic “opt-in advertising” which can be turned on and off, and controlled completely by a user. Cool, eh? What do you think?

Could not resist this image of Mr SpongeBob in writing this post.We have noticed recently that many users are using ProWebSurfer to replace ads with images for their children. Setting this up, along with tricks such as hiding the toolbar in the browser for young children, may be valuable for parents wishing to customize what their youngsters see when they surf. Any ideas for good content for childrens’ albums (I personally love the Spongebob album)?

I just got a new 10 megapixel camera. It takes great pictures. How ever these pictures do not work well in my PWS replacement albums because the images are huge. I have a DSL conection how ever it still takes a long time for the image to down load.

Recently I started using http://snipshot.com/ . Its a great web site. I use snipshot to resize my photos to a web friend size. They also make it really easy for me to crop my images down to common ad sizes, like 120×240, or 120×600

Its easy to add images from any website to your replacement albums

Now we have the images in place, we simply create a new album in ProWebSurfer (I have to be a registered user to do this). This requires entering in the URL into each image definition: I usually copy and paste to do this. In the second field I add the location I want to go to if a user clicks on my image. Example below.

Prepare the images in the right sizes, and make sure they are online somewhere you can get the URL location (I use flickr but any online location will do).

I upload my images to flickr and make sure I know the location of each image.In Firefox I can see this by right clicking on the image in Flickr and selecting “Copy Image Location”. and example of my current upload (UK Vintage Ads) is below.

I am just creating a cool new album of vintage UK advertisements from the period 1900 – 1978. 70′s ads are the most embarassing.

There are three main steps I take to create a new album:

Find the content: any pictures will do. Make sure you capture and crop the images for best effect – common ad sizes are listed below.
Prepare the images in the right sizes, and make sure they are online somewhere you can get the URL location (I use flickr but any online location will do)
Create a new album and link the album images to the pictures you just created. Please note that you can also put a link to a general website in the second field, which allows you to click on the image and it may take you to a favored site.

Takes a few minutes but the results are worth it. Here are the image sizes – create as many of these as you can.

120 x 240
120 x 600 skyscraper
125 x 125
160 x 600 wide skyscraper
180 x 150
234 x 60
250 x 250
300 x 250
336 x 280
468 x 60 banner
728 x 90 leader board
